While other kids are glued to screens, Cody is out in the woods at dawn, dragging his weary parents along on hikes with binoculars in hand and a running commentary on regional bird calls. He can ID a warbler by sound alone and once corrected a park ranger on migration patterns. His bedroom is a shrine to feathers, field guides, and Audubon posters. He even takes classes at the Audubon Society “for fun,” which his parents now understand is code for “you’ll be up at 5 a.m.”
