Maya has found her thing and her thing is water, specifically the being near it, in it, or horizontal beside it with her eyes closed. The sound does something to her nervous system that nothing else has managed to replicate… it just settles everything down, smooths out the edges, reminds her that most of what felt urgent probably wasn’t. The sea breeze is a gift she accepts daily and without complaint. The swim is restorative in ways she couldn’t fully explain but doesn’t need to. She once encountered an octopus on a morning swim and considered it the best day of her life, a ranking that has not changed. Maya does not believe there is a problem in life that the water can’t at minimum improve. So far the water has not proven her wrong.
