Jean-Pierre spent years working the cosmopolitan angle. The beret, the vague references to places he'd "basically lived in," the carefully practiced air of a man who had seen more than this town could offer. Then one day he ran into someone he's known since the third grade at the hardware store, and they talked for forty minutes about nothing, and something in him quietly gave up the act. These people know him. They knew him before the beret. The pace is slow, the roads are familiar, and everyone waves. Turns out the small life he spent so long outrunning is kind of perfect. Jean-Pierre is as surprised as anyone.
